Paper and Board: Specify the Actual Stock
For cards, rulebooks, punchboards and boxes, specify the stock, thickness, color expectations and finish. Discuss recycled or responsibly sourced paper options during quotation, and check availability for that order. When FSC-certified material is required, request confirmation of the applicable documentation and labeling route before approving artwork. Inserts and Component Protection
Paperboard inserts and dividers may suit some game sets, but the structure must still hold the components securely. Wooden meeples, dice and loose tokens normally need separate clear PE bags when the agreed packing specification requires them. Reducing unnecessary packaging should not create missing parts, abrasion or transit damage. Review the complete packed sample before changing bags, wraps or trays.
Printing and Surface Finishes
Confirm the ink, coating, lamination and decorative finishes for the actual product. Review legibility, color and durability on a sample, especially for frequently handled playing cards or printed game boards. Discuss alternative finishes with the production team; do not assume that a particular ink or paper makes the whole finished product recyclable or suitable for every recycling system.
Plan Components and Production Together
A complete component list helps reconcile card counts, punchboard layouts, book pages and packaging dimensions before production. Approving one version of the artwork and BOM reduces avoidable reprints and changes. For mixed-material projects, printed parts and specialist-sourced accessories should follow the same approved specifications and quality checks.
Right-Sized Retail and Export Packaging
Size the game box and insert around the finished components rather than an early estimate. What to Include in a Sustainable Manufacturing Brief
Provide the component list, order quantity, target market and intended age group, plus any required paper sourcing, plastic reduction or packaging targets. Identify non-negotiable performance needs such as card stiffness, repeated handling and component protection. Ask the supplier to explain alternatives, sample requirements and cost changes separately, so the decision is based on a workable specification.
Review Evidence Before Making Environmental Claims
Keep approved material specifications and any relevant supplier documentation with the production files. Check that packaging claims match the materials actually ordered and supplied; do not infer whole-product certification from one component.
