Custom board game components including tokens, dice, wooden pieces and metal accessories

Board Game Components Guide: Tokens, Punchboards, Dice and Custom Accessories

Compare tokens, punchboards, wooden pieces, custom dice, miniatures and metal accessories when planning production with a board game components manufacturer.

Components define how a game feels, plays and survives repeated use. Their materials, dimensions, colors and tolerances also affect tooling, assembly, packaging and cost. Clear specifications make quotation and sampling easier. 1. Build a complete component list and BOM

Start with a bill of materials (BOM) that gives each component a unique name. Record its quantity per game, finished size, material, color, printing method, surface finish and packing position. Reference artwork or a simple drawing helps distinguish pieces that look similar.

The BOM should match the rulebook, box contents list and artwork files. It also needs to identify shared components and language-dependent parts. A structured list allows the manufacturer to check completeness, estimate production processes and prepare a packing test without relying on assumptions.

2. Punchboards, tokens and cardboard tiles

Paperboard and wooden components should be specified by size, thickness, color and finish.

Punchboards are commonly used for coins, counters, map tiles, standees and player markers. Important specifications include board thickness, printed sides, coating, cut shape and the number of boards in each game. Tokens should release cleanly while remaining secure during packing and transport.

Small shapes, narrow bridges and artwork placed too close to a cutting line can reduce durability or create visible alignment differences. Add bleed and a practical safety margin around important graphics. For interlocking tiles, slots and unusually shaped pieces, a physical sample is useful for checking fit before mass production.

3. Wooden meeples, cubes and markers

Wooden components give games a tactile, durable feel. Standard meeples, cubes, discs, houses and cylinders can often use existing shapes, while custom silhouettes may require new tooling. Specify finished dimensions, wood type or performance requirement, paint color and whether the design needs printing, laser marking or another decoration process.

Color references should use a recognized color system rather than screen appearance alone. Natural grain, edge shape and paint coverage can vary slightly, so samples should be reviewed as physical products. Pieces intended for bags or tight insert wells also need consistent dimensions.

4. Custom dice: material, size and markings

Custom game dice, metal coins, badges and board game accessories
Dice and metal accessories require clear specifications for material, dimensions, markings and finish.

Custom game dice may use acrylic, resin, wood or other suitable materials. Common formats include D6, D8, D10, D12 and D20, but the correct option depends on gameplay, appearance and budget. Define the die size, base color, face layout, marking color and quantity of each design.

Markings can be recessed, printed or otherwise applied depending on the design and material. Fine artwork may need simplification so symbols remain readable on small faces. Check face orientation, symbol order, contrast, edge finish and rolling balance during sampling. If several dice share a palette, approve them together for better visual consistency.

5. Plastic miniatures and molded components

Miniatures, trays, bases, dials and custom plastic pieces usually require more development than stock components. The manufacturer needs 3D files or detailed drawings, target dimensions, material, color and assembly information. Sculpt detail should be evaluated at the final production scale, not only in a large digital render.

Tooling cost, mold layout and production quantity affect unit price. A prototype can help confirm scale and appearance, while a production-material sample is still needed to assess fit, flexibility, surface texture and color. Parts that connect should have clearly defined tolerances.

6. Metal coins, badges and custom accessories

Metal coins, first-player markers, badges and decorative tokens can add weight and a premium finish. Provide dimensions, thickness, artwork, plating color, edge style and any enamel areas. Very fine lines or small recessed details may need adjustment for reliable production.

Metal pieces should also be checked against cards, boards and inserts because hard edges can mark nearby printed surfaces. Separate wells, bags or protective wrapping may be appropriate. Niceam Product can coordinate these items with the broader range shown on our Products page.

7. Safety, color control, sampling and quality checks

Materials and testing requirements depend on the product, age grading and destination market. Share the intended market early so the relevant requirements can be reviewed. Approved samples and color references should be recorded for production comparison.

Quality checks may cover quantity, dimensions, printing position, color, finish, edges, component fit and packing order. A complete assembled game should be checked in addition to individual parts. Learn more about our production coordination and quality approach on the About Niceam Product page.

8. What to provide for a components quotation

  • Game quantity and destination country
  • Component BOM with quantities per game
  • Finished sizes, materials, colors and surface finishes
  • Print-ready artwork, dielines, drawings or 3D files
  • Reference samples or photographs where available
  • Packaging, sorting and assembly requirements
  • Target sample date and delivery schedule

If some specifications are still open, send the current BOM and design references first. We can identify missing details and discuss practical manufacturing options before quotation and sampling. Contact Niceam Product to review custom board game components or a complete game project.
